Magika 1.0 is the first stable release of Google’s AI based content type detection system, built to replace brittle rule based file identification with a small neural model. It inspects raw bytes rather than filenames or extensions, allowing it to distinguish between more than two hundred binary and text formats, including many programming, configuration, and data science file types. The engine has been rewritten in Rust for performance and memory safety, and is designed to run in milliseconds per file on a single CPU. Google uses Magika widely in services such as Gmail, Drive, and Safe Browsing to route files to the correct security or processing pipeline, and it is available as open source tooling and libraries for other developers.
