MedLM is a suite of domain-specialized foundation models from Google Cloud designed for regulated healthcare and life-science use. It understands long clinical text (notes, discharge summaries, guidelines) and can pair that with other modalities in supported configurations, enabling tasks like: drafting and refining clinical notes, summarizing encounters, extracting entities (problems, meds, allergies), suggesting ICD/CPT codes, generating prior-auth letters, answering questions over formularies or guidelines, and powering care-navigation or member-support agents.
For builders, MedLM integrates with Vertex AI so you can add retrieval (RAG) from approved medical sources, ground outputs to ontologies (e.g., ICD-10, SNOMED) via tool/function calling, and return structured JSON for EHR or claims pipelines. It supports fine-tuning or adapters on private data, monitoring and safety filters, data-residency controls, and enterprise observability. Typical adopters include providers (clinical documentation, scribe assistance), payers (utilization management, benefits Q&A), and biopharma (literature review, protocol support).
