Tool that uses local files to compile essays/papers

Any student/researcher knows how time-consuming it is to read many documents, summarise and then write a paper.
The requested tool (should support Word, PDF, HTML etc.) will only serve as time-saving, not a replacement of the real job of writing! Many thanks in advance
